Travel & Accommodation

York is itself well connected by all major roads, the railways, and coaches. It’s reasonably connected by air but will require a short journey by train and/or bus. As a city that gets its income from tourists, there is also lots of accommodation – but book soon.

Driving

The venue is 10 minutes from the nearest motorway down quiet countryside roads. The actual approach to the venue is down a short narrow road where passing places are limited so please be patient with drivers going in the opposite direction.

While usually safe please be careful on the country roads leading to Appleton Roebuck, there are a few blind bends which can catch you unaware.

If coming from York it’s still a short drive down the same roads.

Trains and Coaches

York is on the East Coast Mainline with quick rail connections to and from London, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, and Edinburgh.

During peak hours, there is usually a train from all directions. But one thing that Britain is becoming famous for is the ability of the train companies to ‘forget’ that to be a train company requires running a train, so please leave plenty of time for your journey.

Book direct with the rail companies at:

All the big coach companies run services to York most days and nights. They either stop at the railway station or the bus station around the corner from the railway station.

As there is no public service to the venue you will then need to get a taxi or hire a car to get you to the venue.

Flying

The nearest airport is Leeds Bradford Airport, followed by Manchester Airport.

Both are international airports, but experience says that unless you have easy/cheap flights into Leeds, try and look for flights into Manchester. Despite being further away from York it’s easier and often quicker and cheaper to fly into Manchester then drive or get a train to York, than it is to get transport from Leeds Bradford.

Further away there are:

  • Newcastle
  • Liverpool
  • Birmingham
  • All London airports including Stanstead

Once you have arrived at the airport then you will need to look at the options above for getting yourself to York.

Alternatively, you can hire a car and drive to York.

Accommodation

We would love to have you all stay with us, unfortunately, the house is not big enough to cater to all guests, and it will also be a pretty busy place to be around the wedding weekend so you won’t get much rest if you stay with us!

Fortunately, York is a tourist city so there is no shortage of places (hotels, Airbnb, lodges, B&Bs) to book and you can book through your usual routes (internet, travel agent).

The only advice is to book early as during the school holidays (August is the UK school holiday season) it gets very busy and the better locations book up quickly.
